When you’re speaking with someone, in any language, and they sound so formal…

Do you feel like you can trust them?

Most of the time when somebody sounds incredibly formal, we feel that there’s something wrong. There’s some reason we can’t really trust them.

We don’t have this connection with them and we probably don’t want to do business with them.

Now, think for a minute, when you’re speaking in English, do you sound formal?

DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA IF YOU SOUND FORMAL?

I can tell you from my experience, almost every client I begin working with sounds so formal at the beginning.

Well, it’s not, because you’re trying to be formal. It’s because of the way in which you’ve learned English. You learned English from school.

Everything was very specific with lots of grammar rules and trying to be perfect all the time.

Well, the result is that people sound very formal.

MAYBE YOU SOUND VERY FORMAL when you’re speaking English and you don’t even know it.

Then I ask, do you think people trust you when you’re speaking English?

DO YOU THINK CLIENTS TRUST YOU? 

DO YOU THINK YOUR STAFF TRUSTS YOU?

And, DO YOU THINK YOUR STAKEHOLDERS TRUST YOU?

Because you sound so formal speaking English.
